L. 3rd New York (Ulster) Regiment 1775

This was one of four regiments raised in New York early in 1775 and had its first colonel, James Clinton, later to be succeeded by Peter Gansevoort. It was considered one of the best equipped and uniformed units on the Continental roster. When the invasion of Canada was decided upon it was rushed to Fort Ticonderoga to spearhead the force being assembled by General Richard Montgomery. The route north was long and arduous and though Benedict Arnold who was struggling through Maine to join them before Quebec had the more difficult terrain to cross, Montgomery's was no sinecure. Broiling days, freezing nights, Indians, Loyalists, division in the ranks, lack of supplies and short term enlistments - it was the familiar story of the early days of the Revolution....
