V. Colonel Henry Knox (MA)

Henry Knox, born in Boston, Mass., July 25, 1750 and died in Thomaston Maine, October 25, 1806. His father, William Knox and mother, Mary Campbell Knox, were both from Northern Ireland. His father died when he was young and Henry quit school to support his family. As a young man he became the proprietor of "The London Book-Store", a Boston bookstore and spent much of his spare time reading about history. He read many military books, but his main interest was the artillery. He volunteered during the battle of Bunker Hill and the Boston Siege. He discovered how the lack of heavy American artillery was such a critical problem which resulted in the British capture of Fort Ticonderoga. On July 5, 1775, Knox met with George Washington and so impressed him with his knowledge of artillery that on Nov. 17, 1775, Washington appointed Knox as colonel of the Regiment of Artillery....
