P. Washington's Life Guard

Though popularly known as Washington's Life Guard and/or Washington's Body Guard, the official designation of this distinguished unit was The Commander-in-Chief's Guard, so named by an act of Congress 15 April 1777. It was activated by a General Order of 11 March 1776, and to its dissolution on 20 December 1783 Captain (later Major), Caleb Gibbs of Massachusetts was it commanding officer....
